Not your typical riding school… and we like it that way.

Bay Riding Club is a small, friendly riding school where ponies have hearts as big as their personalities, confidence grows quickly, and lessons often end with “Can we pleeease do one more?”  Founded in 2024 by Robyn Costello-Nicolson, this little yard was built on a simple idea: horses should be fun. No pressure, no pretence - just good people, happy horses, and a place where everyone feels welcome.

We’re all about giving children a safe and gentle introduction to riding and pony care… but don’t be fooled — there’s a lot of laughter, a bit of chaos, and a whole lot of fun along the way. It’s in these moments that nervous beginners become brave, quiet kids find their voice, and confidence grows one ride at a time.

To support that, we’ve created the BRC Riders Collective - our levels-based program designed to guide riders as they grow. It gives structure without pressure, helping riders build their skills both in and out of the saddle while gaining real confidence and independence. As riders move through the levels, they develop their riding, their horse care, and their overall understanding — not just what to do, but why it matters. And along the way, they earn their colours and receive rosettes as they move up, marking their progress and all the effort that happens behind the scenes.

More Than Just Lessons!

While lessons are at the heart of what we do, Bay Riding Club is about more than just riding. When we’re not in lessons, there’s always something going on - from school holiday fun days and Saturday Saddle Club to “Own Your Own Horse” days, trail rides, and the occasional clinic. It’s not just a place you come to ride - it’s a place you become part of.

Everything we do comes back to one simple goal: to create a safe, supportive space where riders can learn, grow, and truly fall in love with horses. Because there’s nothing quite like watching a child go from “I’m not sure I can…” to “Watch me do it again.”

Volunteer Programme.png

Our volunteer program is designed for horse lovers who want to experience real life at a working riding school in South Africa. Volunteers become part of the daily rhythm of the yard - helping care for the horses, assisting with lessons, and being involved in the day-to-day life of the riding club. Some days are busy, some are relaxed, but every day involves horses.

It’s hands-on, sometimes a little chaotic, and incredibly rewarding - a real taste of life at a working riding school. You’ll learn about horse care, riding school management, and the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a yard running. And yes - there will be riding! Whether you’re a beginner or experienced rider, you’ll have the chance to take lessons, help exercise and school the horses, and spend plenty of time in the saddle. Most importantly, you’ll become part of the Bay Riding Club family - a group of people who love horses, laugh a lot, and aren’t afraid of a bit of hard work.
